Color Studies:
New work by Paulina M. Johnson, Krystal Mackey, Ann Feldman, and Jill Bergman in July
Bubblegum & Mint, Mint & Coral, Cobalt & Butter, Wine & Sage, Paper on edge feathers by Paulina M. Johnson
There is a celebration of color at The Alley Gallery and Art Studios in July! The show, Color Studies, was inspired by Paulina M. Johnson who has been wanting to push beyond her comfort level with color. Her artwork is created by gluing strips of paper on edge to create a three-dimensional image. To test out different color combinations and how they interact, she created a series of large, delicate feathers.
Paulina says that when the paper is on edge, “We see the actual pigment of the paper strips, but often they are affected by the color of the background. The background either accentuates the hue or dulls it in significant ways. Sometimes, new hues arise in the spaces between the paper strips which are dependent on light. It’s fascinating but still, for me, very hard to predict.”
The above images are a collection of the new, colorful work by our other featured artists: Ann Feldman’s glowing red Poppies, Krystal Mackey’s ceramics with glazes in charming color combinations, and a couple from Jill Bergman’s new series, Beautiful Hands. The hands are relief prints with colored pencil and white pen drawing.
Above is Ann Feldman’s playful painting, Colorful Steamboat which has been turned into a Liberty Puzzle! Liberty Puzzles are wooden jigsaw puzzles with amazing shapes made in Boulder, Colorado. These puzzles can be purchased through West Lyfe, the store in front of The Alley, in the same building. If you come during ArtWalk, July 3, 5-8 pm, the connecting hall will be open and you can get a puzzle and see the original art at The Alley all in the same stop!
